This month, SWD had the opportunity to speak to the lovely folks over at Twinkl all about dyslexia, working with dyslexia and what it means to have dyslexia in your daily life in a fab new blog post from their blog called Living With Dyslexia: From Those Who Know it Best.
Twinkl is a platform that connects teaching professionals with teacher-created resources to support learning across the board and transform people's lives through education. Their website is home to over 525,000 resources with new content added every day, and they're a huge part of the teaching experience for professionals who have been thirty or forty years in the game to those just starting out on their teaching careers and training to teach in universities.
We chatted about what some strengths of dyslexia might be and who’s looking for these skills out there in the world today, as well as some of the problems that somebody with dyslexia might face in their daily lives when it comes to the big focus on reading that’s still a huge part of the way that we communicate in 2022. Our SWD representative joins voices from all over the dyslexia community, from our pal John Hicks of The Studying Dyslexia Blog to other expert voices from Dyslexia CodeBreakers, The Dyslexia Guild, global EdTech movers and shakers Scanning Pens and even more of the biggest names in apps, learning and advocacy today. We’re proud to be part of such a diverse group of voices, from specialists and creators to those with dyslexia or who live with somebody who does, and it's great to see the profile of dyslexia and literacy differences being raised in this way on education platforms like Twinkl.
Dyslexia is a condition that is part of the lives of between 10 and 20% of people alive in the world today. And yet in some ways, there’s so much we don’t know about what it’s actually like to have dyslexia, and especially about how we can change and support that experience so that people who have dyslexia can thrive in work, in education, and in their personal and general lives. And that’s why we’re such big fans of blogs and pieces of media like this, that bring together opinions and experiences from all over the dyslexia world for a better and more faceted understanding, as well as being an easy way to access some of the ideas that are at the heart of our vibrant community. It's about developing a broader picture of dyslexia and neurodiversity as a whole, as well as raising awareness of dyslexia and the ways in which it can be a big part of somebody's life - and when we understand more and we're listening to people who live and create around dyslexia and literacy differences every day, it's another step towards inclusivity by way of a better understanding.
