It's the first of October, and we've Gone Red for Dyslexia.
Go Red for Dyslexia is a worldwide campaign supported by Succeed With Dyslexia that takes place during Dyslexia Awareness Month in October. It aims to change the narrative for people with dyslexia and low literacy. It’s focused on raising awareness of dyslexia and working to end the stigma, and showing the world all of the amazing things that individuals with dyslexia can do.
2022 is Go Red’s year of inclusivity: that means focusing on celebrating and helping the people who are building the foundations for a better, more accessible tomorrow in the workplace, at school, and in our communities and societies.
How Can I Get Involved this October?
If you’re an educator, a tutor, or work closely with students and schools, we’d love for you to dedicate some time to talk about inclusivity with children and young people by…
- Having an assembly about the importance of inclusive thinking
- Starting a conversation about how inclusivity affects them and others
- Helping students use these discussions to effect the change they want to see
- Guided activities on how to hack your environment to make them inclusive for everyone
- Red-themed bake sales or non-uniform days to raise funds for your local dyslexia association
If you’re part of an organisation that works closely with people with dyslexia or even just within the global neurodiversity community, we’d like to see you Go Red by…
- Wearing your finest clothing to raise awareness of our cause
- Sharing the campaign message on social media and in the communities you work in
- Let us know how you’re creating an inclusive change at work
If you’re in business, we’d like you to start thinking about inclusivity in the work you do and exploring the idea of inclusivity in what you work towards every day by…
- Working with HR to invite a guest speaker to lead a focus group about inclusivity
- Have a coffee morning to brainstorm how you could lead the charge in your sector
- Show up in your best red clothes to raise awareness - or grab some Go Red goodies to share!
We also know that this year might be difficult for some people as they're impacted by changing bills, housing situations and rises in the cost of living -that's why we're not telling individuals specifically how to celebrate Go Red, as everybody's situation is different. We'd love for you to take part however you can, and to see whatever you get up to, even if it's just sharing a few of our posts to your social media, sharing some photographs of how you've talked about dyslexia, or even just got creative with what you have at home. How you Go Red is up to you - there aren't any rules, and we'd love you to take part.
Don't forget to tag us using #GoRedForDyslexia on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, however you get involved - and that goes for anybody in schools, businesses or organisations too. We want to share your work with the world!
Why do we Go Red?
We’re all familiar with the color red: when we’re learning in class and looking back at our work, we associate red with our mistakes, corrections, and crossings out. It’s a color that’s been used to draw attention to a sense of failure, and Go Red have decided it’s time for a paradigm shift. With this campaign, Succeed With Dyslexia want to reclaim the color red and this part of dyslexic history. Red can become something empowering for the global dyslexia community, a color that unites us as we create change for the better- something that represents awareness, diversity, innovation, connection and our strengths.
Statistics vary on the subject, but it’s thought that around one in ten people everywhere have dyslexia. But as far as public perceptions and knowledge go, many people are still in the dark about it, and what it means.
People everywhere are treated differently because they have dyslexia, and some people hold the vastly incorrect assumption that having dyslexia means you’re not smart or capable of incredible things. Some people who have dyslexia aren’t even aware of it, because they’ve never had guidance on what to look for, what help and support is out there, and how small changes like assistive tech can open up a whole new world of living and learning.
Go Red for Dyslexia wants to change these narratives for the better.
